When you use your card outside the United States or in a foreign currency, there are a few important things to know about how your purchase is processed.
What counts as an international transaction?
A transaction is considered international if:
- You make a purchase outside the United States, or
- You pay in a currency other than U.S. dollars (USD)
Even if the charge appears in USD, it may still be processed internationally.
How currency conversion works:
If your purchase is made in a foreign currency:
- The amount is converted into U.S. dollars using an exchange rate set by the card network.
- This rate is based on the processing date, not the exact moment you made the purchase.
- Because of this, the final amount may be slightly different from what you expected at checkout.
Are there additional fees?
Yes. International transactions may include:
- A foreign transaction fee
- Additional processing fees
These combined charges can be up to 2% of the total transaction amount.
What this means for you:
- Your final charge may be slightly higher than the original purchase price.
- Differences come from both exchange rate changes and processing fees.
